1. Select the Appropriate Location for the Stove.
- Ideally, install it against an exterior wall for easy access to the flue pipe.
- Unless installing a non-electric pellet stove, you’ll need a power outlet nearby.
- When the stove is operating, it can create negative pressure in the room, so no open-flame appliances should be in the same room (unless there’s adequate air intake).
- The stove must not be placed near curtains, armchairs, furniture, or other flammable materials.
- The stove must not be installed in explosive environments or potentially explosive areas that could become explosive due to machinery, materials, or dust.
- Before installation, ensure all finishes or combustible material beams are placed at an appropriate distance and outside the stove’s radiation zone.
- For proper operation, air must circulate within the casing to prevent overheating. This requires maintaining minimum distances and creating ventilation holes with an 80 cm² surface area.
Remember that a pellet stove is quite heavy to move. If installing it yourself, ensure you have someone nearby who can help.
2. Thermally Protect the Floor and Surroundings.
Install floor insulation or an approved, non-flammable thermal pad under the pellet stove. This protects the house from potential fires or accidental sparks.
This protection should extend approximately 15 cm on each side of the stove.
3. Install the Flue System
Create a wall opening for the first flue collar to properly vent exhaust gases outside. The hole size depends on the pipe size – check the installation manual for the correct exhaust pipe diameter, typically 8-10 cm.
When drilling through potentially flammable materials like wood walls, use a wall pass-through and properly insulate the pipe using suitable materials (1.3-5 cm thick with minimum thermal conductivity of 0.07 W/m°K).
Connect the first flue collar to the stove and route it outside through the wall opening. Seal between the collar and wall opening to prevent infiltration. Decorative trim pieces can improve appearance.
The flue must:
- Terminate at the roof (recommended for individual homes)
- Have sufficient insulation
- Be as vertical as possible, with less than 45° deviation
- Maintain safe distance from flammable materials using air gaps or insulation
- Have a preferably circular, constant, and independent interior section
- Include an inspection chamber for solid material collection
- End with a chimney cap to protect from rain and debris while ensuring proper exhaust in all weather conditions
4. Combustion Air Requirements and Ventilation
The stove must be installed in a ventilated space with sufficient air for proper combustion, following current regulations:
- Minimum room volume of 20 m³
- “Combustion air intake” to exterior wall or adjacent room (40 m³/h)
- Adjacent room cannot be bedroom, bathroom, or fire risk areas
- Air intakes must remain unblocked and protected by grills or screens

- Sealed pellet stoves use coaxial pipes for both exhaust and air intake
