This article will cover all the necessary steps to consider when installing a pellet stove.
Before proceeding with pellet stove installation, you should know that there are various national and local regulations that must be followed, which vary by country, and should always be reviewed.
Remember that incorrect installation of the pellet stove results in non-compliance with legal regulations and may void the warranty on its components.
What installation does a pellet stove need?
An air pellet stove, without being a ductable stove, primarily needs a flue gas exhaust pipe. Therefore, if one doesn’t exist, it must be installed. Additionally, they typically require an electrical power connection.
How to Install a Pellet Stove
Pellet stoves are increasingly popular and are becoming the preferred heating system for many users. They are highly energy efficient and do an excellent job of keeping your space pleasant and warm.
Although we always recommend hiring a professional for installation, we will outline the steps to install it yourself.
Always remember to follow the installation recommendations provided by the manufacturer in the installation manual.
These instructions are for installing a free-standing or floor-mounted pellet stove. If you’re installing a pellet stove insert that fits into a fireplace, check out our other article “How to Install a Pellet Insert in a Fireplace.”
To install a pellet stove yourself, you’ll need to complete these steps:
1. Select the Appropriate Location for the Stove.
- Ideally, install it against an exterior wall for easy access to the flue pipe.
- Unless installing a non-electric pellet stove, you’ll need a power outlet nearby.
- When the stove is operating, it can create negative pressure in the room, so no open-flame appliances should be in the same room (unless there’s adequate air intake).
- The stove must not be placed near curtains, armchairs, furniture, or other flammable materials.
- The stove must not be installed in explosive environments or potentially explosive areas that could become explosive due to machinery, materials, or dust.
- Before installation, ensure all finishes or combustible material beams are placed at an appropriate distance and outside the stove’s radiation zone.
- For proper operation, air must circulate within the casing to prevent overheating. This requires maintaining minimum distances and creating ventilation holes with an 80 cm² surface area.
Remember that a pellet stove is quite heavy to move. If installing it yourself, ensure you have someone nearby who can help.
2. Thermally Protect the Floor and Surroundings.
Install floor insulation or an approved, non-flammable thermal pad under the pellet stove. This protects the house from potential fires or accidental sparks.
This protection should extend approximately 15 cm on each side of the stove.

3. Install the Flue System
Create a wall opening for the first flue collar to properly vent exhaust gases outside. The hole size depends on the pipe size – check the installation manual for the correct exhaust pipe diameter, typically 8-10 cm.
When drilling through potentially flammable materials like wood walls, use a wall pass-through and properly insulate the pipe using suitable materials (1.3-5 cm thick with minimum thermal conductivity of 0.07 W/m°K).
Connect the first flue collar to the stove and route it outside through the wall opening. Seal between the collar and wall opening to prevent infiltration. Decorative trim pieces can improve appearance.
The flue must:
- Terminate at the roof (recommended for individual homes)
- Have sufficient insulation
- Be as vertical as possible, with less than 45° deviation
- Maintain safe distance from flammable materials using air gaps or insulation
- Have a preferably circular, constant, and independent interior section
- Include an inspection chamber for solid material collection
- End with a chimney cap to protect from rain and debris while ensuring proper exhaust in all weather conditions
4. Combustion Air Requirements and Ventilation
The stove must be installed in a ventilated space with sufficient air for proper combustion, following current regulations:
- Minimum room volume of 20 m³
- “Combustion air intake” to exterior wall or adjacent room (40 m³/h)
- Adjacent room cannot be bedroom, bathroom, or fire risk areas
- Air intakes must remain unblocked and protected by grills or screens
- Some stoves allow direct outdoor air connection
- Sealed pellet stoves use coaxial pipes for both exhaust and air intake

5. Connect to Electrical Power
- Installation by qualified personnel with circuit breakers
- Avoid electrical cables near hot components
- Proper grounding per regulations
- Follow manufacturer’s startup manual
- Test operation and contact Technical Service if issues arise
Conclusions
While professional installation is recommended, installing a pellet stove isn’t overly complicated with proper skills and tools. Follow regulations and safety precautions, including:
- Place stove on heat-insulating material
- Create proper wall opening for exhaust
- Install complete chimney system
- Test operation
Frequently Asked Questions about Pellet Stoves
Can I install a pellet stove in an apartment?
Installation in apartments is complicated, as the regulations in some countries require roof ventilation through adequate ducts, which most buildings lack. It is easier in penthouses with permission from the community. Always consult your local regulations.
Can I install a pellet stove myself?
Installation requires experience with carpentry and masonry for ventilation. Professional help is recommended if you lack these skills. Always comply with local regulations.
How far should a pellet stove be from the wall?
Maintain 5-10 cm from rear wall, 15-20 cm from side walls, and 40 cm minimum from ceiling or hanging objects.
Do I need a fresh air intake for my pellet stove?
Not all pellet stoves require external fresh air intake, but it may be necessary depending on local regulations. Most manufacturers recommend external fresh air ventilation.
What should you consider before a pellet stove installation?
Before installing a pellet stove, consider factors like room size, ventilation requirements, fuel storage space, and local building codes. You’ll also need to determine the ideal location that allows proper clearance from combustible materials and ensures efficient heat distribution.
Is professional pellet stove installation required in your area?
While regulations vary by location, most areas require professional installation by certified technicians. This ensures compliance with local building codes and manufacturer specifications. It’s essential to check with your local authorities regarding specific requirements.
How much does a typical pellet stove installation cost?
The cost of pellet stove installation typically ranges from $2,000 to $4,000, including the unit and labor. Final costs depend on factors like venting requirements, the complexity of the installation, and any necessary modifications to your space.
How long does pellet stove installation take?
A standard pellet stove installation usually takes 2-4 hours when performed by experienced professionals. However, more complex installations requiring significant modifications might take longer.
What maintenance is required after installation?
Regular maintenance includes daily ash removal, weekly burn pot cleaning, monthly inspection of gaskets and seals, and annual professional servicing. Proper maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the life of your pellet stove.
Can I install a pellet stove in any room?
While pellet stoves are versatile, they must be installed in locations that meet safety requirements for ventilation and clearance. The room should have adequate space for the unit and fuel storage, and proper electrical access for the stove’s components.
