Insert Pellet Stove : How Do They Work?

Pellet stove inserts function similarly to standard pellet stoves, though they have slightly different ventilation and exhaust requirements. The combustion chamber, pellet auger, and ash removal system are identical to those in traditional pellet stoves. Additionally, pellet stove inserts come equipped with the same safety features as regular pellet stoves.

Pellet Feeding

A hopper stores the pellets until they are fed into the combustion chamber for burning. Pellet stoves use a mechanical auger to transport pellets from the hopper to the combustion chamber. A grate or mesh at the bottom holds the pellets in place while allowing ash to fall into a tray below.

Ignition

The pellets are ignited using a specialized electric igniter, and a combustion fan supplies oxygen to the flames. The combustion fan adjusts its speed to control the burn rate and helps move exhaust gases through the vent to the outside. Some models also include a secondary fan for this purpose.

Heat Distribution

Heat exchanger tubes are located directly above the combustion chamber. The air inside these tubes is heated by the burning pellets. A convection fan then circulates the warm air into the room.

Safety Features

Pellet stoves and inserts are equipped with various safety devices and sensors. These include a hopper door lock and a vacuum switch to ensure the combustion fan is operating. A temperature control system monitors heat levels and will shut down the stove if overheating is detected. Since the combustion chamber is fully sealed within a steel and glass casing, no smoke can enter the home. Instead, all smoke and fine ash are expelled outside by the combustion fan.

Automatic Control System

Pellet stove inserts feature an automatic temperature control system that regulates the operation of the combustion and heat distribution fans. Some models also include Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing you to control the stove remotely via a smartphone. These stoves typically offer fully thermostatic operation with a built-in ambient temperature sensor.

Exhaust Venting

In a pellet stove insert, combustion gases are vented through the existing masonry chimney. A rigid or flexible liner is installed, depending on the specific requirements.

A pellet stove insert operates much like a standard pellet stove, with the main difference being its compact design, which takes up less space. These inserts are designed to mimic the aesthetics and elegance of a traditional fireplace, making them a perfect addition to your living room. Pellet stove inserts are an excellent way to repurpose the space of an old wood-burning fireplace, offering a modern, eco-friendly, and stylish heating solution.
